Carlos Alvarado Quesada served as the 48th President of Costa Rica from 2018 to 2022. During his presidency, he led ambitious climate and energy policies, positioning Costa Rica as a global leader in decarbonisation and sustainable development. His administration advanced renewable energy, electrification of transport, and nature-based solutions, while also strengthening democratic institutions and multilateral cooperation. Carlos Alvarado Quesada previously held ministerial roles in labour and social development, and has also worked as a journalist, author, and academic. He currently contributes to global dialogue on climate action, sustainability, and inclusive growth.
