Hydropower is among the most capital-intensive forms of renewable energy, and access to finance remains one of the sector’s most persistent constraints. Too often, projects struggle to attract or retain investment because of the complexity and perceived risks of environmental and social issues, along with a lack of consistent, independently verified data.
The Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS) was designed to close this gap. It provides a sector-specific framework covering 12 topics, from environmental and social management to governance, climate resilience and hydrological resource assessment, aligned with IFC Performance Standards and World Bank Environmental and Social Safeguards. Commercial banks, development finance institutions, insurers and green finance frameworks are already embedding the HSS in their investment policies and due diligence requirements.
This session examines the HSS from two sides of the same transaction. For project owners, certification is a strategic financial asset: it expands access to capital, strengthens green finance eligibility, reduces transaction costs, and enables projects to sell Renewable Energy Certificates at a premium. For financial institutions, it provides the sector-specific layer of ESG due diligence that was previously missing, enabling more consistent risk assessment and more confident investment decisions.
A central feature of the session is a data-driven comparison of industry assumptions and financial institution reality. Participants will consider what they believe to be the primary investment barriers in hydropower from a lender’s perspective. Their responses will be compared with findings gathered directly from financial institutions, revealing where gaps exist and what the industry can do to close them.
