As power systems lean harder on variable renewables, energy infrastructure needs to be modernised to respond when the grid needs it most. ANDRITZ has just transformed Mørre kraftverk in Norway, turning a conventional hydropower plant into a hybrid hydro-and-battery power station. Making this possible is ANDRITZ’s HIPASE platform, with an integrated hybrid controller that coordinates turbine and battery operation in real time. They share live signals to absorb large load swings and stabilise frequency far more effectively than either asset alone, including under isolated grid conditions.
This has resulted in a genuine symbiosis, with the battery taking on the rapid, wear-inducing load changes, and hydropower's controllability keeping it reliably recharged.
